By the end of the 1700s, the virtues of reason, moderation and order had seemed so important in the enlightmentnow seemed to be blocking the full development of the human spirit. Rather than viewing the wirkd through the cool eyes of reason and scientific inquiry, a younger generation followed their emotions and imagination to what they felt was a truer, fuller understanding of the world. It was individual, not society that was important. It was the heart, not the head that was the best guide in these extraordinary and dramatic times. This was the age of revolutions - the American Revolution, the French Revolution and the industrial revolution.
